Better and faster engagement with industry: Develop skills to make connections, identify new opportunities and create possible collaborations with key industry stakeholders.

There are many factors driving researchers and universities to increase and improve collaborations with industry stakeholders, including to diversify research income, help their research achieve greater impact and to gain access to specialist industry knowledge. The ANU Technology Transfer Office is hosting an intensive, full-day workshop for ANU researchers interested in developing their industry engagement skills to better foster these relationships.

Topics covered in this workshop include:

  • Communicating and connecting effectively with non-science and technology stakeholders
  • Identifying and articulating engagement opportunities between your research group/school and potential clients
  • Introducing yourself at networking and industry events by creating a personal pitch
  • Identifying then selecting new organisations to work with market segmentation fundamentals
  • Skills to help uncover what your clients are trying to fix, accomplish or avoid

The workshop will be facilitated by Ian Storie, an independent business consultant implementing Miller Heiman Group IP. Ian specializes in working with engineers, scientists, researchers, knowledge commercialization, BD professionals & executive teams across ANZ and globally to teach and embed better client engagement practices, strategic marketing processes, new market entry, commercial opportunity pipelines and large account management with Industry, government and Not For Profits building endearing client relationships, more strategic engagements and closing more commercial deals faster. Ian has worked in business development and strategic marketing roles for organisations such as Siemens Australia, GE and CSIRO, and facilitated hundreds of training programs and collaborative workshops across industry sectors including medical devices, biosecurity, edutech, and mining and manufacturing.

Who should attend: This workshop is suitable for HDR students, academics and professional staff at ANU who are pursuing commercial pathways with their research projects, or are working with those who are, and are interested in learning how to better engage with industry partners.

Registration is free but spaces are strictly limited. Please note that this workshop is only open to HDR students, academics and professional staff at ANU.

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.
